Grace Never Checks Your Past or Rank

taareelay ganikaa bin roop kubijaa bi-aaDh ajaamal taaree-alay.
You saved the prostitute, and the ugly hunch-back; You helped the hunter and Ajaamal swim across as well.
ਚਰਨ ਬਧਿਕ ਜਨ ਤੇਊ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਭਏ ॥
charan baDhik jan tay-oo mukat bha-ay.
The hunter who shot Krishna in the foot - even he was liberated.

I am a sacrifice, a sacrifice to those who chant the Lord's Name. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

You have lifted up so many who felt they had nothing to offer — the outcast, the overlooked, the ones the world turned away.

Even those who once did great harm were changed and set free.

I give myself again and again to everyone who keeps the Beloved's Name in their heart.

Grace never checks your past or your rank — its door is open to everyone.
The deeper layer

Grace never checks your past or your rank; its door is open to everyone.

Naam Dayv lists people from well-loved old stories. Ganikaa was a courtesan whom society looked down on. Kubijaa was a woman with a bent back whom people mocked. Bi-aadh was a hunter. Ajaamal was a man who had lost his way. Charan badhik was the hunter whose arrow struck Krishna in the foot. Each of them is remembered as being lifted up, in spite of low standing or past mistakes. Taaree-alay — You carried them across.

Naam Dayv's point is bold and welcoming: grace does not look at your record. It reaches the outcast, the overlooked, even those who once did harm. Think of a lifeguard who doesn't ask who you are before pulling you out of the water.

This is the heart of the Bhagats' songs. It sweeps away the idea that birth or caste makes some people closer to the One. The Beloved's door is open to absolutely everyone.

Ha-o bal bal jin raam kahay — I give myself again and again to those who speak the Name. That is Naam Dayv's joy at how far grace reaches.

A Question to Sit With

How does it feel to know that no one is ever too far gone to be welcomed home?
