Verse 4 of 5

The Treasure You Traveled For Is in Your Heart

ਜੈ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਤਟਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਜਾਹੀ ॥
jai kaaran tat tirath jaahee.
For the sake of it, you journey to sacred shrines and holy rivers;
ਰਤਨ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਘਟ ਹੀ ਮਾਹੀ ॥
ratan padaarath ghat hee maahee.
but this priceless jewel is within your own heart.
ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਬਾਦੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ॥
parh parh pandit baad vakhaanai.
The Pandits, the religious scholars, read and read endlessly; they stir up arguments and controversies,
ਭੀਤਰਿ ਹੋਦੀ ਵਸਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ॥੩॥
bheetar hodee vasat na jaanai. ||3||
but they do not know the secret deep within. ||3||

In plain words

People travel to holy places and sacred rivers looking for it.

But the priceless jewel is sitting inside your own heart the whole time.

The scholars read and read. They argue and argue.

And still they miss the secret hidden right inside them.

The treasure people travel and study to find is already inside your own heart.
The deeper layer

Guru Nanak says the treasure people travel far to find is already inside their own heart.

People go to tirath, holy places and sacred rivers, looking for it. But ratan padaarath ghat hee maahee — the priceless jewel is right within the heart. The sacred is moved from "out there" to "in here." It is about tasting the sweetness of the One, called Har Ras, not only reading about it.

Then Nanak turns to the pandit, the learned scholar. He reads and reads, and stirs up arguments. Yet he does not know the treasure hidden inside. This is not about any one faith. It is about knowing about the One without ever meeting the One.

Think of reading every recipe for mango ice cream but never tasting a spoonful. Long journeys and endless study can both walk right past the jewel within.

A Question to Sit With

Where do you tend to look for answers "out there" that might actually be inside you?
