Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
The calf loves its mother's milk; its little heart blooms the moment it sees her. And the student loves to gaze upon the teacher's face.
Like a calf at the sight of its mother, the student's heart blooms at the sight of the teacher.
The calf and mother simile -- the heart blossoming (the same word as the Suniai pauris of Japji) at the sight of the source of nourishment. The repeated refrain drives home that the Guru is, for the disciple, mother and nourishment both.
