Pleasures Taste Sweet; the Danger Is Forgetting

The soul of the man is lured by gold and women; emotional attachment to Maya is so sweet to him.

The Lord God does not even enter his thoughts; how can he be saved, O my Lord King? ||1||

In plain words

The mind is pulled by gold and desire; attachment to the world tastes so sweet. It clings to houses, palaces, horses, all the pleasures. And the One never even crosses the mind -- so how can such a person be saved?

The world's pleasures taste sweet -- the danger is forgetting the One entirely.
The deeper layer

This one is an honest picture of how sweet the world can taste, and what the real danger is.

Maya is the pull of the world: money, comfort, and things to want. Gold, fine houses, horses, and pleasures all taste sweet. The verse does not call them evil. They really are attractive.

The danger is something else. It is forgetting the One completely. Think of a kid so deep in a video game that dinner goes cold, and no one else in the house gets noticed.

So the verse ends with a real question. How can such a person be saved? The rest of the shabad answers it with grace and with the Sangat, the company of good people.

A Question to Sit With

What pleasures are so absorbing that they crowd out everything else?
