Verse 4 of 6

Earn the Name and Be Happy

mayray man har har har har har jas ootam lai laahaa har man hasee-ai.
O my mind, the Praises of the Lord, Har, Har, Har, Har, Har, are exalted and sublime. Earn the profit of the Lord's Name, and let your mind be happy.
har har aap da-i-aa kar dayvai taa amrit har ras chakhee-ai. ||3||
If the Lord, Har, Har, in His Mercy, bestows it, then we partake of the ambrosial essence of the Lord's Name. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

My mind, the One's praises are high and beautiful. Earn the profit of the Name, and let yourself be happy. And if the One, in mercy, gives it, you get to taste the nectar of its essence.

Earn the Name and be happy -- and if grace gives it, taste the nectar itself.
The deeper layer

The merchant image (profit of the Name) joined to happiness and the nectar of the essence -- but always conditional on grace (if the Lord bestows; Har Ras). Joy is earned in remembrance yet given in grace.

A Question to Sit With

What is a happiness that comes from doing something good rather than getting something?
