Keep Away From Company That Forgot the Name

mayray man naam binaa jo doojai laagay tay saakat nar jam ghutee-ai.
O my mind, without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and attached to duality, those faithless cynics are strangled by the Messenger of Death.
tay saakat chor jinaa naam visaari-aa man tin kai nikat na bhitee-ai. ||4||
Such faithless cynics, who have forgotten the Naam, are thieves. O my mind, do not even go near them. ||4||

In plain words

My mind, those without the Name, in love with division, are strangled by death. Those who have forgotten the Name are thieves -- do not even go near them.

Keep away from company that has forgotten the Name -- it drags you down.
The deeper layer

A strong warning about company: the loveless, Name-forgetting person is a thief whose company should be avoided -- the negative of Sat Sangat. Just as good company lifts, bad company drags down; the soul should choose its associations.

A Question to Sit With

Is there company that pulls you away from your better self?
