With the Naam in the heart and the Ambrosial Naam on our lips,
ਨਰਹਰ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਰਹਰ ਨਿਹਕਾਮੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
narhar naam narhar nihkaam. ||1|| rahaa-o.
through the Name of the Lord, we rise above desire, like the Lord. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

Keep the Name in your heart and let the sweet Name be on your lips. Through it you rise above wanting -- free and full, like the One itself.

Hold the Name in heart and on lips, and you grow free of wanting -- full, like the One.
The deeper layer

The answer to all those questions is one word: the Name.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. Naam ridai amrit mukh naam — the Name in the heart, and the sweet, life-giving Name on the lips. Naam is the Name, the living presence of the One. It is held inside and spoken outside, both at once.

Narhar naam narhar nihkaam — through the Name of the One, we become free of wanting, like the One. Nihkaam means without craving.

That is a surprising promise. We start to become like what we seek. Think of a sponge soaking in warm water. After a while it is warm all the way through. The Name does not just connect us to the One. It fills us with the One's own fullness, beyond all craving.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you feel "full" enough that you stop chasing the next thing?
