Sikhism·Raag Gauree·Shabad 6
Verse 3 of 6

You Come From Awareness and Return to It

ਸਹਜੇ ਆਵੈ ਸਹਜੇ ਜਾਇ ॥
sehjay aavai sehjay jaa-ay.
With intuitive ease we come, and with intuitive ease we depart.
ਮਨ ਤੇ ਉਪਜੈ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
man tay upjai man maahi samaa-ay.
From the mind we originate, and into the mind we are absorbed.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮੁਕਤੋ ਬੰਧੁ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥
gurmukh mukto banDh na paa-ay.
As Gurmukh, we are liberated, and are not bound.
ਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ਛੁਟੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਇ ॥੨॥
sabad beechaar chhutai har naa-ay. ||2||
Contemplating the Word of the Shabad, we are emancipated through the Name of the Lord. ||2||

In plain words

We arrive with quiet ease and we leave with quiet ease. We rise out of the mind, and back into the mind we settle. Turned toward the teaching, you are free -- never trapped. Sitting with the teaching, the Name sets you loose.

You come from awareness and return to it -- and which way you face decides if you are free.
The deeper layer

We come from awareness, and we go back into it, gently.

Sehjay aavai sehjay jaa-ay — with calm ease we come, and with calm ease we go. Man tay upjai man maahi samaa-ay — we rise from man, the mind, and settle back into it. Here the mind is often read as awareness itself, not just a body made of stuff. The whole coming and going is easy and effortless.

Then comes what makes the difference: which way we face. Gurmukh mukto banDh na paa-ay — a gurmukh, one who faces the Guru's teaching, is free and not tied up. Sabad beechaar chhutai har naa-ay — thinking deeply on the Shabad, the Word, a person is set loose through the Name.

It is like a sunflower. It is the same flower all day long. What changes everything is that it turns to face the sun.

A Question to Sit With

What does it feel like to be "facing the right way" inside yourself?
