The Lord has showered His Mercy upon servant Nanak; through the wisdom of the Guru's Teachings, he has enshrined the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||4||12||26||64||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

People try all kinds of things, but without the One's mercy, its Name is never obtained. The One poured its mercy on me, and through the teaching, I have treasured the Name in my heart.

However much we try, the Name is not obtained without grace -- it comes by mercy.
The deeper layer

The closing seal of all Mehl 4: people try all sorts of things, but without grace the Name is not obtained -- it comes by mercy. The servant credits his whole attainment to mercy rather than to his own striving. Grace has the first and last word.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you finally received only when you stopped forcing it?
