The One Happiness: Finding His Doing Pleasing

ਏਕੁ ਕੁਸਲੁ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਬਤਾਇਆ ॥
ayk kusal mo ka-o satguroo bataa-i-aa.
The True Guru has shown me that there is only one pleasure.
ਹਰਿ ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਿਆ ਭਗਤਾ ਭਾਇਆ ॥
har jo kichh karay so har ki-aa bhagtaa bhaa-i-aa.
Whatever the Lord does, is pleasing to the Lord's devotee.
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥੪॥
jan naanak ha-umai maar samaa-i-aa. ||4||
Servant Nanak has abolished his ego, and he is absorbed in the Lord. ||4||

In plain words

The teacher has shown me there is only one real happiness: whatever the One does is pleasing to the one who loves it. With the ego dissolved, I am absorbed in the One.

The one real happiness is to find whatever the One does pleasing.
The deeper layer

The one true happiness is to find everything the One does pleasing.

The real answer begins here. Ayk kusal mo ka-o satguroo bataa-i-aa — the True Guru showed me there is only one happiness. Har jo kichh karay so har ki-aa bhagtaa bhaa-i-aa — whatever the One does is pleasing to the One's devotee.

This is being content with Hukam, the flow of existence. Happiness is not getting what you want. It is finding what the One does pleasing. Gurbani says this often: whatever happens is Your Will. Think of a surfer. The surfer cannot choose the waves, but learns to enjoy riding whichever wave comes.

Jan naanak ha-umai maar samaa-i-aa — servant Nanak has quieted his ego and is absorbed in the One. With ha-umai, the "me first" feeling, set down, the soul rests in the One.

A Question to Sit With

What would change if you could be at peace with how things actually are?
