Happiness and the One Are Found the Same Way

This is the way to find the Lord, our Help and Support. ||1||Second Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

This is how happiness is found, my friends. This is how the One, our help and support, is found.

Happiness and the One are found the same way: by dissolving ego and resting in the One's will.
The deeper layer

Here is the answer to the question the shabad began with.

This line is the second rahaa-o, a second "pause," and it answers the first one. In bidh kusal hot mayray bhaa-ee — this is how happiness is found, my brothers and sisters. I-o paa-ee-ai har raam sahaa-ee — this is how the One, our help and support, is found.

"This" means two things. It means being content with what the One does. And it means letting ha-umai, the ego, melt away. Think back to the lost keys. After checking every wrong place, you finally find them.

Guru Arjan built the whole shabad as a question with a full answer. Happiness was never in houses, power, or ruling lands. It is in giving yourself to the One, and letting the ego dissolve.

A Question to Sit With

Looking back, where has your deepest contentment actually come from?
