The Teacher's Word Dissolves Doubt and Prejudice

ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਬਚਨੁ ਅਟਲ ਅਛੇਦ ॥
gur kaa bachan atal achhayd.
The Guru's Word is infallible and unchanging.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਕਟੇ ਭ੍ਰਮ ਭੇਦ ॥
gur kai bachan katay bharam bhayd.
Through the Guru's Word, doubt and prejudice are dispelled.
ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਬਚਨੁ ਕਤਹੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
gur kaa bachan katahu na jaa-ay.
The Guru's Word never goes away;
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ॥੨॥
gur kai bachan har kay gun gaa-ay. ||2||
through the Guru's Word, we sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||2||

In plain words

The teacher's word is sure and unchanging. Through it, doubt and prejudice fall away. The teacher's word never deserts you; through it, we sing the One's praises.

The teacher's word is sure -- it dissolves doubt and prejudice alike.
The deeper layer

The Guru's Word never changes, and it clears away doubt and the walls between people.

The drumbeat line goes on. Gur kaa bachan atal achhayd — the Guru's Word is steady and cannot be broken. Gur kaa bachan katahu na jaa-ay — it never goes away. Gur kai bachan har kay gun gaa-ay — through it, we sing the One's praises.

One line needs a closer look. Gur kai bachan katay bharam bhayd — through the Guru's Word, bharam and bhayd are cut away. Bharam is doubt. Bhayd is prejudice: the feeling of difference, of being separate. Read with the rest of the song, it means the Word clears away more than one person's doubts. It also takes down the walls between people. Think of a new kid at lunch. One kind word, and suddenly there is room at the table.

A Question to Sit With

What prejudice or fixed idea has softened in you over time? What helped?
