When Everything Fails to Satisfy, Ask One Who Knows

ਸੋ ਸੁਖੁ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਸੰਤ ਬਤਾਵਹੁ ॥
so sukh mo ka-o sant bataavhu.
Show me that peace, O Saints,
ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਬੂਝੈ ਮਨੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਵਹੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
tarisnaa boojhai man tariptaavho. ||1|| rahaa-o.
which will quench my thirst and satisfy my mind. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

So I ask the wise and kind people around me: show me that peace — the real one.

The kind that finally quiets this endless wanting and lets my mind rest, satisfied at last.

After everything fails to satisfy, the wisest move is to ask someone who knows.
The deeper layer

This one says: when nothing has satisfied you, ask someone who knows.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. So sukh mo ka-o sant bataavhu — O wise and good ones, show me that peace. It is the peace that tarisnaa boojhai, puts out the thirst of wanting, and man tariptaavho, lets the mind feel full.

This is the turning point. After the list of everything that failed, the speaker turns and asks for help. The sant are simply people who know a peace the world could not give. Think of being lost in a new city, and finally asking someone who lives there. So the whole song becomes a real question, not a complaint.

A Question to Sit With

Who in your life seems genuinely at peace — and what could you learn from them?
