Sikhism·Raag Gauree·Shabad 76
Verse 3 of 6

No Entertainment Can Buy Contentment

ਅਸੁ ਪਵਨ ਹਸਤਿ ਅਸਵਾਰੀ ॥
as pavan hasat asvaaree.
You may have horses as fast as the wind, elephants to ride on,
ਚੋਆ ਚੰਦਨੁ ਸੇਜ ਸੁੰਦਰਿ ਨਾਰੀ ॥
cho-aa chandan sayj sundar naaree.
sandalwood oil, and beautiful women in bed,
ਨਟ ਨਾਟਿਕ ਆਖਾਰੇ ਗਾਇਆ ॥
nat naatik aakhaaray gaa-i-aa.
actors in dramas, singing in theaters
ਤਾ ਮਹਿ ਮਨਿ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੨॥
taa meh man santokh na paa-i-aa. ||2||
- but even with them, the mind does not find contentment. ||2||

In plain words

You could have the fastest horses and elephants to ride. You could have sweet-smelling oils, and comfort and beauty all around.

There could be music and shows and every entertainment there is. And even then, the mind still wouldn't settle into contentment.

Every entertainment in the world can't buy the one thing — contentment.
The deeper layer

This one says no amount of fun can buy contentment.

The verse is a list of luxuries. Horses as fast as the wind. Elephants to ride. Cho-aa chandan, sweet sandalwood oil. Nat naatik, actors and shows, and singing. Every pleasure of the senses.

And yet: taa meh man santokh na paa-i-aa — in all of it, the mind found no santokh, no contentment.

This carries on the confession from the first verse. Not just power and status, but every comfort too, with the same empty result. Think of a birthday with a mountain of presents. By evening, you are already wondering what comes next.

A Question to Sit With

When you've had a whole day of fun things, does the fun itself make you content? What does?
