The Grandest Pleasures Never Reach the Deep Place

ਤਖਤੁ ਸਭਾ ਮੰਡਨ ਦੋਲੀਚੇ ॥
takhat sabhaa mandan doleechay.
You may have a throne at the royal court, with beautiful decorations and soft carpets,
ਸਗਲ ਮੇਵੇ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਬਾਗੀਚੇ ॥
sagal mayvay sundar baageechay.
all sorts of luscious fruits and beautiful gardens,
ਆਖੇੜ ਬਿਰਤਿ ਰਾਜਨ ਕੀ ਲੀਲਾ ॥
aakhayrh birat raajan kee leelaa.
the excitement of the chase and princely pleasures
ਮਨੁ ਨ ਸੁਹੇਲਾ ਪਰਪੰਚੁ ਹੀਲਾ ॥੩॥
man na suhaylaa parpanch heelaa. ||3||
- but still, the mind is not made happy by such illusory diversions. ||3||

In plain words

A throne at court, beautiful decorations, soft carpets underfoot. Gardens full of fruit, every luxury you could name.

The thrill of the hunt, the games and pleasures of royalty. And still, none of these passing dazzles makes the heart truly happy.

The grandest pleasures are still just surface — they can't reach the deep place.
The deeper layer

This one says the grandest pleasures stay on the surface and never reach the deep place inside.

The list finishes. Takhat, a throne. Doleechay, soft carpets. Baageechay, beautiful gardens. Raajan kee leelaa, the games of princes. Then the verdict: man na suhaylaa parpanch heelaa — the mind is not made glad by these showy distractions.

Three verses of splendor, growing bigger each time. One result that never changes. The key word is parpanch, fancy, passing show. The pleasures are not wicked. They are just surface. They cannot reach the place inside that is really asking to be filled. Think of shiny wrapping paper on an empty box.

A Question to Sit With

What's the difference between something fun and something that actually fills you up?
