Verse 5 of 6

What Palaces Couldn't Give, Singing Together Did

ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਸੰਤਨ ਸਚੁ ਕਹਿਆ ॥
kar kirpaa santan sach kahi-aa.
In their kindness, the Saints have told me of the True One,
ਸਰਬ ਸੂਖ ਇਹੁ ਆਨੰਦੁ ਲਹਿਆ ॥
sarab sookh ih aanand lahi-aa.
and so I have obtained all comforts and joy.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਗਾਈਐ ॥
saaDhsang har keertan gaa-ee-ai.
In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, I sing the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੪॥
kaho naanak vadbhaagee paa-ee-ai. ||4||
Says Nanak, through great good fortune, I have found this. ||4||

In plain words

Then the kind and wise ones told me the simple truth — and suddenly I found every comfort, a joy I'd been chasing everywhere.

It was in singing together, in the company of good people, praising the One out loud. What great good fortune, to have finally found it here.

What all the palaces couldn't give, singing together with good people did.
The deeper layer

This one gives the answer: what the palaces could not give, singing together did.

Kar kirpaa santan sach kahi-aa — in their kindness, the good ones told me the truth. Sarab sookh ih aanand lahi-aa — and I found every comfort and joy. Where? SaaDhsang har keertan gaa-ee-ai — in the saadh sangat, the company of the good, singing the One's praise. Keertan means singing praise together.

What satisfied was not a bigger palace. It was belonging, and a shared song. Think of a family singing in the car on a long drive. Nobody is rich in that moment, and everybody is happy.

Vadbhaagee paa-ee-ai — it is found by great good fortune, which means by grace.

A Question to Sit With

When have you felt fullest — alone with your stuff, or together with people you love?
