The Praising Voice Grows Precious by What It Praises

ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਜਿਹਵੇ ਆਰਾਧਿ ॥ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਆਗਾਧਿ ॥
aath pahar jihvay aaraaDh. paarbarahm thaakur aagaaDh.
Twenty-four hours a day, O tongue, dwell upon God, the Unfathomable, Supreme Lord and Master.
ਈਹਾ ਊਹਾ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਹੇਲੀ ॥
eehaa oohaa sadaa suhaylee.
Here and hereafter, you shall be happy forever.
ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਤ ਰਸਨ ਅਮੋਲੀ ॥੩॥
har gun gaavat rasan amolee. ||3||
Chanting the Glorious Praises of the Lord, O tongue, you shall become priceless. ||3||

In plain words

All through the day and night, O tongue, keep the One close — the deep, unfathomable One who holds everything.

Do this, and here and everywhere, you'll be at ease. Singing that praise, your voice becomes something priceless.

The voice that praises becomes precious because of what it praises.
The deeper layer

A voice that praises something beautiful becomes beautiful itself.

Aath pahar jihvay aaraaDh — all through the day and night, O tongue, remember the One. Aath pahar means all eight watches of the day, around the clock. Paarbarahm thaakur aagaaDh — the highest Master, too deep to measure.

Then the gift that comes with it. Eehaa oohaa sadaa suhaylee — here and in the life beyond, you will always be at ease. Har gun gaavat rasan amolee — singing the One's praises, the tongue becomes amolee, priceless.

What we praise changes the one who praises. Think of a choir singing a beautiful song. The song makes the voices shine. Praising is not a chore here. It is what makes the voice precious.

A Question to Sit With

What's something you do so often, and love so much, that it's become part of who you are?
