Verse 3 of 5

With the Real Sweetness Near, Stop Running

ਹੇ ਜਿਹਵੇ ਤੂੰ ਰਾਮ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਉ ॥
hay jihvay tooN raam gun gaa-o.
O tongue, sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord.
ਨਿਮਖ ਨਿਮਖ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਉ ॥
nimakh nimakh har har har Dhi-aa-o.
Each and every moment, meditate on the Lord, Har, Har, Har.
ਆਨ ਨ ਸੁਨੀਐ ਕਤਹੂੰ ਜਾਈਐ ॥
aan na sunee-ai katahooN jaa-ee-ai.
Do not listen to any other, and do not go anywhere else.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੨॥
saaDhsangat vadbhaagee paa-ee-ai. ||2||
By great good fortune, you shall find the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy. ||2||

In plain words

O tongue, sing the praises of the One. In every little moment, hold that Name close.

Don't go running everywhere else chasing other voices — for by great good fortune, you'll find the good company where all of this grows.

When you have the real sweetness close, you stop needing to run everywhere else for it.
The deeper layer

Sing of the One, moment by moment, and good company will find you.

Hay jihvay too raam gun gaa-o — O tongue, sing the praises of the One. Nimakh nimakh har har har Dhi-aa-o — in every moment, keep the One in mind. A nimakh is the blink of an eye.

Aan na sunee-ai katahoo jaa-ee-ai — listen to no other voice, go nowhere else. The point is a happy one. Once you have found what you need, you do not have to run around looking anymore. It is like finally spotting your friend in a crowd. You stop searching every face.

SaaDhsangat vadbhaagee paa-ee-ai — by great good fortune, you find the saaDhsangat, the company of good and holy people. Good fortune here means grace, a gift. Singing and remembering are warm and joyful here.

A Question to Sit With

When you've found something that truly satisfies, do you still feel the need to keep searching?
