Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
O my own dear tongue, drink deeply of the sweetest thing there is — the life-giving nectar of the One.
Soaked in that, colored through by it, you'll finally be satisfied, all the way down.
The Guru talks sweetly to his own tongue and offers it the best taste there is.
This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. Amrit rasnaa pee-o pi-aaree — O dear tongue, drink the amrit. Amrit is the nectar that gives life. Ih ras raatee ho-ay tariptaaree — soaked and colored in this flavor, you will be satisfied.
Calling your own tongue "dear beloved" is tender and a little playful. It is like talking kindly to your own fingers before a hard piano piece. The tongue loves tastes, so the Guru turns it toward the one sweetness that lasts. That warm, loving tone carries through the rest of the shabad.
If your tongue could "taste" kindness or wonder, how might you feed it more of that?
