The Wisest Wish: to Learn From the Truly Good

ਸੰਤਨ ਕੀ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਕਵਨ ਵਖਾਨਉ ॥
santan kee mahimaa kavan vakhaana-o.
How can I describe the Glories of the Saints?
ਅਗਾਧਿ ਬੋਧਿ ਕਿਛੁ ਮਿਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਨਉ ॥
agaaDh boDh kichh mit nahee jaan-o.
Their knowledge is unfathomable; their limits cannot be known.
ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਮੋਹਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕੀਜੈ ॥
paarbarahm mohi kirpaa keejai.
O Supreme Lord God, please shower Your Mercy upon me.
ਧੂਰਿ ਸੰਤਨ ਕੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੀਜੈ ॥੪॥੧੭॥੮੬॥
Dhoor santan kee naanak deejai. ||4||17||86||
Bless Nanak with the dust of the feet of the Saints. ||4||17||86||

In plain words

How could I ever describe the greatness of such true-hearted people? Their depth is beyond my measuring; I can't reach the edge of it.

So this is my prayer: let a little of their spirit touch me. Let me learn even from the dust of their path — the humblest closeness to them.

The wisest thing you can ask for is to learn from people who are truly good.
The deeper layer

This one is a prayer to learn from people who are truly good.

This is the closing verse. Santan kee mahimaa kavan vakhaana-o — how could I describe the greatness of the sant? A sant is a true-hearted person who lives close to the One. AgaaDh boDh — their understanding is too deep to measure.

Then comes the prayer: Dhoor santan kee naanak deejai — give Nanak the dust of the saints' feet. The dust of the feet means humble closeness. It is being willing to sit low and learn from good people. It does not mean making yourself feel worthless.

Think of a young player who helps sweep the court just to be near a great coach and pick up what she knows. The wish is to be close enough to learn.

A Question to Sit With

Who is someone so good that just being around them makes you a little better?
