The Restless Pull Hides in Comfort and Beauty Too

It torments us through the darkness of the five evil passions. ||3||

In plain words

It reaches the landowner, the person with nothing, and the one who lives for fun.

It reaches us through music and parties, through the sounds we love.

It reaches us through comfort: soft beds, grand rooms, beautiful things.

And it reaches us through the darkness stirred up by our five restless pulls: wanting, anger, greed, clinging, and pride.

The same restless pull hides in comfort and beauty just as much as in hardship.
The deeper layer

Guru Arjan finishes his list of the places the restless wanting reaches us.

It reaches bhoom rank, the landowner and the poor person. It reaches us through geet naad, songs and music at parties. It reaches us through sayj mahal seegaar, soft beds, palaces and decorations. And it reaches through the panch doot, the five thieves: kaam, craving; krodh, anger; lobh, greed; moh, clinging; and ahankaar, pride.

The five are not monsters. They are pulls inside us, to understand and not to fear. AnDhi-aar, darkness, is the fog they stir up in the mind. It is like a snow globe. Shake it and you cannot see through it. Let it settle and the view comes back clear.

A Question to Sit With

Which of the five pulls — wanting, anger, greed, clinging, pride — do you notice most in yourself?
