Running Away Won't Escape the Restlessness

ਬਿਆਪਤ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੈ ਹਉ ਫਾਸਾ ॥
bi-aapat karam karai ha-o faasaa.
It torments those who act, entangled in ego.
ਬਿਆਪਤਿ ਗਿਰਸਤ ਬਿਆਪਤ ਉਦਾਸਾ ॥
bi-aapat girsat bi-aapat udaasaa.
It torments us through household affairs, and it torments us in renunciation.
ਆਚਾਰ ਬਿਉਹਾਰ ਬਿਆਪਤ ਇਹ ਜਾਤਿ ॥
aachaar bi-uhaar bi-aapat ih jaat.
It torments us through character, lifestyle and social status.
ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ ਬਿਆਪਤ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗ ਰਾਤ ॥੪॥
sabh kichh bi-aapat bin har rang raat. ||4||
It torments us through everything, except for those who are imbued with the Love of the Lord. ||4||

In plain words

It reaches us when we act tangled up in ego, and it reaches us in family life just as much as in trying to run away from everything.

It sneaks into our habits, our routines, even our sense of who we are. In fact it reaches into everything — except one place: a heart soaked in the love of the One.

Running away doesn't escape the restlessness — only a heart full of love is beyond its reach.
The deeper layer

Guru Arjan says the restless pull reaches into everything, except a heart soaked in love for the One.

It reaches us when we act ha-o faasaa, trapped in the ego. It reaches girsat, family and household life, and udaasaa, leaving the world behind, just the same. It reaches our habits and customs, even jaat, our place in society.

Then comes the strong last line: sabh kichh bi-aapat bin har rang raat. It touches everything bin, except, the one who is har rang raat, dyed in the color of the One's love. Notice that it reaches those who run away from the world too. Running away is no escape. Think of a T-shirt dyed all the way through. Wash it, stretch it, and it keeps its color. Only the dyed heart is beyond the pull's reach. That one exception is the whole point.

A Question to Sit With

If you can't outrun a restless feeling, what could fill you up instead so it has no room?
