Everything Moves Within One Embrace

ga-orhee gu-aarayree mehlaa 5.
Gauree Gwaarayree, Fifth Mehl:
jaa kai vas khaan sultaan.
Kings and emperors are under His Power.
jaa kai vas hai sagal jahaan.
The whole world is under His Power.
jaa kaa kee-aa sabh kichh ho-ay.
Everything is done by His doing;
tis tay baahar naahee ko-ay. ||1||
other than Him, there is nothing at all. ||1||

In plain words

Kings and rulers, and the whole wide world — all of it moves within the One's care and reach.

Everything that happens, happens by the One's doing. And there's nothing at all that sits outside of it — nothing left over, nothing beyond.

Everything that exists moves within one embrace; nothing is left outside.
The deeper layer

Everything, from kings to the whole wide world, moves within the One.

Jaa kai vas khaan sultaan — kings and emperors are within the One's power. Vas means power, reach, care. Jaa kai vas hai sagal jahaan — the whole world is too. Jaa kaa kee-aa sabh kichh ho-ay — everything happens by the One's doing. Tis tay baahar naahee ko-ay — nothing at all is outside the One.

This is Ik Onkar, the One that holds everything. The One is not a ruler bossing creation from outside. It is the reality inside which everything moves. Think of fish in the ocean. Wherever they swim, they are in the water. So vas is best heard as care and reach, warm and close, not as control.

A Question to Sit With

If nothing at all is truly outside the One, is there anywhere you could ever be alone?
