Sikhism·Raag Gauree·Shabad 87
Verse 3 of 5

Held by the One, the Restless Mind Settles

ਸਹਜ ਸੂਖ ਆਨੰਦ ਨਿਧਾਨ ॥
sahj sookh aanand niDhaan.
The Savior Lord is the treasure of intuitive peace, poise and bliss.
ਰਾਖਨਹਾਰ ਰਖਿ ਲੇਇ ਨਿਦਾਨ ॥
raakhanhaar rakh lay-ay nidaan.
He shall save me in the end.
ਦੂਖ ਦਰਦ ਬਿਨਸੇ ਭੈ ਭਰਮ ॥
dookh darad binsay bhai bharam.
My pains, sufferings, fears and doubts have been erased.
ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣ ਰਖੇ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਮ ॥੨॥
aavan jaan rakhay kar karam. ||2||
He has mercifully saved me from coming and going in reincarnation. ||2||

In plain words

The One who protects is a treasure-house of natural, easy peace and quiet joy. The One holds you safe, right to the end.

Held that way, aches and worries, fears and confusions loosen and fade. The endless coming-and-going of a restless mind finally settles into rest.

Held safe by the One, the restless coming-and-going of the mind finally settles.
The deeper layer

Guru Arjan says that when the One holds you safe, the restless mind finally settles into peace.

Sahj sookh aanand nidhaan — the One is a treasure-house of sahaj, natural ease, and of peace and joy. Raakhanhaar rakh lay-ay nidaan — the Protector keeps you safe, right to the end.

Then, dookh darad binsay bhai bharam — aches, worries, fears and confusions fade. And aavan jaan, the coming and going, is stopped. Many read aavan jaan as the cycle of being born again and again. Here it also means something you can feel today: a restless mind that keeps rushing back and forth, finally coming to rest.

Think of a snow globe after you stop shaking it. The flakes drift down, and the scene inside becomes clear and still. That stillness is sahaj.

A Question to Sit With

What does it feel like when a mind that's been racing all day finally comes to rest?
