Sikhism·Raag Gauree·Shabad 89
Verse 4 of 5

No Love Toward the One Is Ever Wasted

ਜਾ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਸਰਬ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ॥
jaa kee sayvaa sarab niDhaan.
Serving Him, all treasures are obtained.
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਪੂਜਾ ਪਾਈਐ ਮਾਨੁ ॥
parabh kee poojaa paa-ee-ai maan.
Worshipping God, honor is obtained.
ਜਾ ਕੀ ਟਹਲ ਨ ਬਿਰਥੀ ਜਾਇ ॥
jaa kee tahal na birthee jaa-ay.
Working for Him is never in vain;
ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ॥੩॥
sadaa sadaa har kay gun gaa-ay. ||3||
forever and ever, sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When I give myself to the One, every treasure worth having opens up. When I honor the One, real dignity comes to me — the kind no one can take away.

No effort turned toward the One is ever wasted. So forever and always, let me sing what is good and true about the One.

No love turned toward the One is ever wasted; it opens every treasure that actually matters.
The deeper layer

Any love or effort you give to the One is never wasted.

Sayvaa is service, and poojaa is worship, honoring the One. Here they do not mean only temple ceremony. They mean a whole life turned toward the One.

Sarab nidhaan means all treasures. Gurbani teaches that the Name holds everything that pilgrimages and ceremonies promise.

Tahal na birthee jaa-ay — the work does not go to waste. This answers a quiet fear many people have: that their love for the One might not matter. It always matters. Think of watering a seed you cannot see yet. Every drop is doing its work under the soil.

The verse ends with gun gaa-ay, singing the One's goodness. That is naam simran, remembering the Name, in its most joyful form.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you keep doing out of love, even when no one is keeping score?
