In plain words

The Beloved One is never reached by harming yourself. No outward act done to prove love can bring you closer — love is not something you win by hurting yourself.

The One is never reached by harming yourself — love is not something you win by hurting yourself.
The deeper layer

This is the pause line, the rahaa-o, the center of the shabad.

It says the Beloved One is never reached by harming yourself. Jalai na paa-ee-ai raam sanayhee: "the Beloved is not found by burning." In Guru Arjan's time there was a cruel custom called satee. A widow was expected to die in her husband's funeral fire, to prove her love. This shabad speaks against it, plainly.

The Guru is taking a cruel custom apart. The One is never reached by self-harm, or by any outward act done to prove love. Love lives inside, in how we turn our hearts. Think of how a parent's love never asks a child to get hurt to prove anything. Union comes through the heart, never through destroying yourself.

A Question to Sit With

Where might someone get the wrong idea that love has to hurt, and what does real love feel like instead?
