Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
For a while I felt uneasy and afraid, because I imagined the One was far away, off somewhere I couldn't reach.
But the moment I truly looked, that fear melted. The One is everywhere, filling everything, right here.
Fear grows when we think the One is far away. It melts when we see the One is everywhere.
This shabad is by Guru Arjan, the fifth Guru. Dar dar martay jab jaanee-ai door — I was deeply afraid when I thought He was far. Dar means fear. Fear is born from feeling far from the One.
Dar chookaa daykhi-aa bharpoor — my fear ended when I saw Him filling everything. Bharpoor means full to the brim. There is no distance at all. The One fills all things. This is Ik Onkar, the One who is all. Think of a child afraid in a dark room. A parent switches on the light, and the scary shape is only a coat on a chair.
Fear goes, not by being fought, but by seeing truly. What we thought was far away was never missing.
When you feel alone or scared, does it help to remember that what you're looking for might be closer than you think?
