I hold the teacher's presence in my mind and let the teaching-word settle deep inside me.
I keep the teacher's footsteps in my heart and bow, again and again, before the teacher who opens the way to the One.
Guru Arjan gives four ways to keep the Teacher close.
First, gur kee moorat man meh dhi-aan — keep the Guru in your mind. Moorat means form or picture. It is like holding a loved one's face in your mind when they are far away.
Second, gur kai sabad mantar man maan — let your mind accept the Guru's word. Sabad is the Guru's word, the teaching.
Third, gur kay charan ridai lai dhaara-o — keep the Guru's feet in your heart. Holding someone's feet is an old way of showing love and respect.
Fourth, bow to the Guru always. When you bow to the Guru, you are really bowing to paarbarahm, the Highest One the Teacher points to. Think of a signpost on a trail. You thank the sign, but you follow it to where it leads.
Whose words or example do you carry with you when you need guidance?
