In plain words

When the Supreme One turns toward me in mercy, I find the kind and gentle teacher.

Then, day and night holding the Name, I am filled with peace, steadiness, and quiet joy.

Grace comes first and leads you to the teacher — you do not have to earn it.
The deeper layer

The Guru says that the One's kindness comes first, and it leads us to the Teacher.

Paarbarahm jab bha-ay kirpaal — when the Highest One becomes kind. Tab bhaytay gur — then we meet the Guru, the Teacher.

Notice the order. We do not earn the kindness by working hard. The kindness comes first, and it brings us to the Teacher. It is like a parent who signs you up for music lessons before you even knew you loved music.

The gifts that follow are sookh sahj aanand. Sookh is peace. Sahj is a calm, natural ease. Aanand is deep joy. All three rest har naa-ay, in the One's Name, held day and night.

A Question to Sit With

When has help arrived in your life before you even knew how to ask for it?
