Verse 2 of 5

The Teacher And The One Are One

ਗੁਰੁ ਪਰਮੇਸਰੁ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਣੁ ॥
gur parmaysar ayko jaan.
Know that the Guru and the Transcendent Lord are One.
ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jo tis bhaavai so parvaan. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Whatever pleases Him is acceptable and approved. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Know that the teacher and the One are truly one.

And whatever pleases the One, I welcome as right and good.

The teaching and the One it points to are not two different things.
The deeper layer

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line. It is the center of the whole song.

Gur parmaysar ayko jaan — know that the Guru and the Highest One are one. The teaching and the One it points to are not two separate things. Think of sunlight coming in through a window. The light in your room and the sun in the sky are the same light.

Jo tis bhaavai so parvaan — whatever pleases the One, I accept as good. In the Japji this is called mannai, trusting deep inside. It is more than just saying yes. It is living in tune with the One, like a musician playing in time with the band.

A Question to Sit With

What would it feel like to trust that what unfolds is somehow right?
