Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
The teacher is my worship, the teacher is the One I hold highest.
The teacher is my glimpse of the vast, unseen, mysterious One — so I serve at the teacher's feet, which all hearts honor.
Guru Arjan says the Guru is where the unseen One can be met.
Gur mayree poojaa gur gobind — the Guru is my worship, the Guru is Gobind, Lord of the world. He pours every name for the divine onto the Guru: paarbarahm, the Highest One, bhagvant, the Blessed Lord, and day-o, the divine. Gur mayraa day-o alakh abhay-o — my Guru is divine, alakh, unseen, and abhay-o, beyond knowing.
Why? Because the teaching carries the One so fully that it becomes the place where the One can be met. Think of a lamp in a dark room. We are grateful for the lamp, but what we really love is the light. This is not worship of a person just for themselves. It is deep respect for the light that shines through the teaching.
Where do you go to feel close to something greater than yourself?
