The Word No One Can Erase

ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਪਾਈਐ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ॥
gur pooraa paa-ee-ai vadbhaagee.
The Perfect Guru is found, by great good fortune.
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਦੂਖੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੀ ॥
gur kee sayvaa dookh na laagee.
Serving the Guru, pain does not afflict anyone.
ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਮੇਟੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
gur kaa sabad na maytai ko-ay.
No one can erase the Word of the Guru's Shabad.
ਗੁਰੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਹਰਿ ਸੋਇ ॥੪॥੭॥੯॥
gur naanak naanak har so-ay. ||4||7||9||
Nanak is the Guru; Nanak is the Lord Himself. ||4||7||9||

In plain words

By great good fortune the true teaching is found, and living by it, pain cannot settle on me.

Its word can never be erased — the teaching and the One shine as a single light.

The truest teaching cannot be erased, because it and the One are a single light.
The deeper layer

Guru Arjan ends by saying that the Guru's word can never be erased.

Gur pooraa paa-ee-ai vadbhaagee — the perfect Guru is found by great good fortune. Vadbhaagee means very lucky, and here it means grace. Gur kee sayvaa dookh na laagee — serving the Guru, pain cannot take hold.

Gur kaa sabad na maytai ko-ay — no one can erase the Guru's sabad, the Word. Think of words carved into stone instead of written on a whiteboard. Then comes the last line: gur naanak naanak har so-ay — Nanak is the Guru, and Nanak is the One. The Guru, the teaching and the One are a single light. To truly meet the teaching is to meet the One.

A Question to Sit With

What is a lesson that has stayed with you and never worn away?
