Sikhism·Raag Gond·Shabad 17
Verse 3 of 5

Who Bows And Who Is Served

jagat paas tay laytay daan.
They collect taxes from the world,
gobind bhagat ka-o karahi salaam.
but they bow in subservience to God's devotees.
loot layhi saakat pat khoveh.
They plunder and dishonor the faithless cynics,
saaDh janaa pag mal mal Dhoveh. ||2||
but they massage and wash the feet of the Holy. ||2||

In plain words

These five pulls collect their due from the whole world, yet they bow before those who love the One.

They push around anyone who has turned away and forgotten themselves — but they gladly serve the good and gentle.

The same inner pulls that push around a distracted heart will serve a settled one.
The deeper layer

The verse contrasts two ways of living. The saakat — one turned away from the One, caught in cravings — is rendered here without contempt: not a villain, but someone who has lost their footing and can be pushed around by the five. For the saadh (the good, the settled), the five instead pag ... dhoveh — wash their feet, serving them. The difference is not worth but direction: which way the heart is turned.

A Question to Sit With

When are you more easily pushed around by strong feelings — and when less?
