Verse 5 of 5

The Hope That Holds All The Way Through

tis kaa bharvaasaa ki-o keejai man mayray jo antee a-osar rakh na sakaasaa.
Why place your faith in anyone, O my mind, who cannot come to your rescue at the last instant?
har jap mant gur updays lai jaapahu tinH ant chhadaa-ay jinH har pareet chitaasaa.
Chant the Lord's Mantra, take the Guru's Teachings, and meditate on Him. In the end, the Lord saves those who love Him in their consciousness.
jan naanak an-din naam japahu har santahu ih chhootan kaa saachaa bharvaasaa. ||4||2||
Servant Nanak speaks: night and day, chant the Lord's Name, O Saints; this is the only true hope for emancipation. ||4||2||

In plain words

Why lean my whole self on something that cannot hold me when I need it most?

Instead I keep the Name close, take in the teaching, and let it settle in my heart.

Night and day, holding the Name, is the one hope that truly carries me all the way through.

The hope worth building on is the one that is still holding you at the very end.
The deeper layer

The verse asks a clear question: tis kaa bharvaasaa ki-o keejai — why trust what cannot help at the end? The frightening picture of a final moment is turned here toward reassurance: the Name is what stays with you the whole way, not something that abandons you. Har preet chitaasaa — those who hold love for the One in their awareness are carried across. Nanak's closing is the shabad's seal: this is saachaa bharvaasaa, the one true and lasting hope.

A Question to Sit With

What is one hope in your life that you would want to still be standing years from now?
