Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Pouring down kindness, the One has kept me safe.
The five troubles that once loomed so large have scattered and fled.
So don't throw your one life away carelessly, like a lost bet.
The Maker has taken my side.
The 'five demons' (panch doot bikraal) are the five inner troubles — lust, anger, greed, attachment, and pride — pictured here as scattering the moment grace arrives. Joo-ai janam na kabhoo haar, 'do not lose your life in the gamble,' is a warm caution, not a threat: your one life is too precious to fritter away. And the close is pure reassurance — naanak kaa ang kee-aa kartaar — the Maker has taken your side.
Which of the five — wanting, anger, greed, clinging, pride — do you most want to loosen?
