In plain words

The One keeps a loving eye on people who live with goodness.

Ill-will aimed at good people never really lands.

The One holds the good and gentle close, like something treasured.

And lifts them up in a single moment.

The One keeps the good close, and ill-will aimed at them never really lands.
The deeper layer

This shabad is about the sant — the good, gentle, God-connected person — and how the One shelters them. The opening lines, which literally speak of slanderers being 'thrown down,' are rendered through the ill-will-defeats-itself lens: harm aimed at the good simply does not land. The focus stays on the protection, not on anyone's downfall. Sant ka-o raakha-o apnay jee-a naal — the One keeps the good ones close, as dear as one's own life.

A Question to Sit With

Have you noticed that meanness aimed at a genuinely good person often just bounces off?
