Held Close, Breath by Breath

sant kai oopar day-ay parabh haath.
God gives His hand to shelter the Saints.
sant kai sang basai din raat.
He dwells with His Saints, day and night.
saas saas santeh partipaal.
With each and every breath, He cherishes His Saints.
sant kaa dokhee raaj tay taal. ||2||
He takes the power away from the enemies of the Saints. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The One reaches out a sheltering hand over the good.

The One stays with them, day and night.

With every breath, the One cherishes and cares for them.

And the harm others wish them quietly loses its power.

The One cares for the good with every single breath.
The deeper layer

Sant kai oopar day-ay prabh haath — a hand held over the good like a roof. Saas saas partipaal — cherished with every breath, ceaseless care. The line about enemies 'losing their power' (raaj tay taal) is rendered so the emphasis falls on the good person's safety, not on anyone's punishment: ill-will aimed at them simply drains of its force. The One's protection is continuous, intimate, breath-by-breath.

A Question to Sit With

Who is someone who watches over you steadily, day in and day out?
