Gond, Fifth Mehl:

tis kaa ang karay nirankaar. ||1|| rahaa-o.
- the Formless Lord is on his side. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Whoever the Protector chooses to keep safe,

the formless One is on their side.

The One you can't even picture is on your side, like a friend beside you.
The deeper layer

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line. It is the center of the song, and here it comes first.

The Guru says that when the One protects you, the One is on your side.

Jaa ka-o raakhai raakhanhaar — the one whom the Protector keeps safe. Tis kaa ang karay nirankaar — the Formless One stands on their side. Nirankaar means without shape. The One cannot be drawn or pictured.

Ang karay is a warm phrase. It means to take someone's side, to have their back. Think of a friend who walks over and stands next to you when you feel alone on the playground. The One we cannot see is that close.

A Question to Sit With

What does it feel like to know someone has your back, no matter what?
