Sikhism·Raag Gond·Shabad 26
Verse 3 of 5

The One's Protection Is Your Armor

ਰਾਮ ਕਵਚੁ ਦਾਸ ਕਾ ਸੰਨਾਹੁ ॥
raam kavach daas kaa sannahu.
The Lord's protective spell is the armor of His slave.
ਦੂਤ ਦੁਸਟ ਤਿਸੁ ਪੋਹਤ ਨਾਹਿ ॥
doot dusat tis pohat naahi.
The wicked, evil demons cannot even touch him.
ਜੋ ਜੋ ਗਰਬੁ ਕਰੇ ਸੋ ਜਾਇ ॥
jo jo garab karay so jaa-ay.
Whoever indulges in egotistical pride, shall waste away to ruin.
ਗਰੀਬ ਦਾਸ ਕੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਰਣਾਇ ॥੨॥
gareeb daas kee parabh sarnaa-ay. ||2||
God is the Sanctuary of His humble slave. ||2||

In plain words

The One's care is like armor around a loved one.

No trouble, however fierce it looks, can get through it.

Puffed-up pride, held onto, only wears a person thin.

But the humble find their true home in the One's shelter.

The One's care is armor no trouble can get through.
The deeper layer

The Guru says the One's care is like armor that keeps a person safe.

Raam kavach daas kaa sannahu — the One's protection is the armor of the One's servant. Kavach and sannahu both mean armor. Think of a bike helmet. You put it on, and bumps that could hurt you just bounce off.

The verse says even fierce, scary troubles cannot get through that armor.

Then it speaks about pride. Jo jo garab karay so jaa-ay — whoever is puffed up with pride wears away. Pride costs the one who carries it. It is like carrying a heavy backpack full of rocks just to look big.

The song ends on the other side. Gareeb means the humble. The humble find sarnaa-ay, shelter, a safe home in the One.

A Question to Sit With

What is a kind of 'armor' — a habit or support — that helps you face hard days?
