A Wonder Beyond Words

gond mehlaa 5.
Gond, Fifth Mehl:
achraj kathaa mahaa anoop.
Wondrous and beautiful is the description,
achraj kathaa mahaa anoop.
of the beauty of the Supreme Soul, the Supreme Lord God. ||Pause||
naa ih boodhaa naa ih baalaa.
He is not old; He is not young.
naa is dookh nahee jam jaalaa.
He is not in pain; He is not caught in Death's noose.
naa ih binsai naa ih jaa-ay.
He does not die; He does not go away.
aad jugaadee rahi-aa samaa-ay. ||1||
In the beginning, and throughout the ages, He is permeating everywhere. ||1||

In plain words

What a wonder this is — beautiful beyond anything words can hold.

What a wonder this is — beautiful beyond anything words can hold.

The One is never old and never young.

No pain can reach the One, and no shadow of ending can bind it.

The One does not fade and does not go away.

From the very beginning, through all the ages, the One has been present everywhere.

Some things are too vast to draw — you point at them by saying what they are not.
The deeper layer

This shabad describes the One by patiently saying what it is not — the way you point at something too vast to draw. The opening achraj kathaa mahaa anoop ('wondrous, beyond compare') is repeated as the rahau, the note held under the whole song. Then: not old, not young; untouched by pain; not caught in any 'noose of death' — rendered gently as no shadow of ending can bind it. The One does not binsai (fade) or jaa-ay (leave). Aad jugaadee — from the beginning and through all ages — the One simply is, everywhere.

A Question to Sit With

How would you describe something wonderful that's too big to fit into words?
