Bright Faces in the Gathering

Supreme bliss fills the minds of the Saints.

The Saints meditate on the Divine Guru, the Lord God.

The faces of His companions become radiant and bright.
sagal thaan nindak kay ga-ay. ||3||
The slanderers lose all places of rest. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

A deep gladness fills the hearts of good people.

They keep the Guide, the One, warmly in mind.

The faces of those in good company grow bright and glad.

And ill-will finds no place left to stand.

Where goodness fills the room, faces grow bright and ill-will finds no place to stand.
The deeper layer

Santan kai man mahaa anand — great gladness fills the hearts of the good; joy is the atmosphere of good company. Sangat kay mukh oojal — faces grow bright, radiant with that inner gladness. The closing line, that ill-will 'loses all its places' (sagal thaan nindak kay ga-ay), is rendered so the accent stays on the brightness of the gathering: where goodness fills the room, ill-will simply finds nowhere to stand.

A Question to Sit With

Have you noticed how being in a warm, kind group can actually change how people look?
