Sikhism·Raag Gond·Shabad 29
Verse 8 of 9

As You Plant, So You Harvest

ਸੁਣਿ ਸਾਜਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਮੀਤ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥
sun saajan mayray meet pi-aaray.
Listen, O my beloved friends and companions:
ਸਤਿ ਬਚਨ ਵਰਤਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਦੁਆਰੇ ॥
sat bachan varteh har du-aaray.
these words shall be true in the Court of the Lord.
ਜੈਸਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਤੈਸਾ ਪਾਏ ॥
jaisaa karay so taisaa paa-ay.
As you plant, so shall you harvest.
ਅਭਿਮਾਨੀ ਕੀ ਜੜ ਸਰਪਰ ਜਾਏ ॥੭॥
abhimaanee kee jarh sarpar jaa-ay. ||7||
The proud, egotistical person will surely be uprooted. ||7||

In plain words

Listen, my dear friends and companions:

these are true words that hold in the light of the One.

Whatever you plant is what you will one day gather.

And puffed-up pride, in the end, has no root to stand on.

Whatever you plant is what you'll gather — so plant well.
The deeper layer

Sun saajan mayray meet pi-aaray — the verse turns to us directly, warmly: listen, dear friends. Then the plain law: jaisaa karay so taisaa paa-ay — as you plant, so you harvest — the same seed-and-crop truth Gurbani shares with many traditions. The line on the proud being 'uprooted' is rendered gently: pride simply has no root — nothing real to stand on — so it cannot last. The teaching lands as an invitation to plant well, not a threat.

A Question to Sit With

What kind of 'seeds' are you planting in how you treat people this week?
