Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

You are the support of anyone who has no other support, my Guide.

Be kind, and keep safe the ones who love You.

I am filled with wonder at that Guide,

for holding the One in mind, my honor was kept whole.

The Guide is the support of anyone who has nothing else to lean on.
The deeper layer

The Ashtapadee closes where it began, in shelter. Needhri-aa satgur dhar tayree — the Guide is the support of the unsupported, the one who holds those with nothing else to lean on. Balihaaree is rendered as being filled with wonder. And jaa kai simran paij savaaree — 'by remembering, my honor was kept' — means that a life held in the One is a life kept whole, its dignity intact. The hymn ends on gratitude, not triumph.

A Question to Sit With

Who has been there for you at a moment when you felt you had no one else?
