Ink That Won't Wash Off

ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਮੈ ਡਗਰੋ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
gur parsaad mai dagro paa-i-aa.
By Guru's Grace, I have found the Path.
ਜੀਵਨ ਮਰਨੁ ਦੋਊ ਮਿਟਵਾਇਆ ॥
jeevan maran do-oo mitvaa-i-aa.
Birth and death have both been erased.
ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਇਹੁ ਰਾਮ ਕੀ ਅੰਸੁ ॥
kaho kabeer ih raam kee aNs.
Says Kabir, this is formed of the same essence as the Lord.
ਜਸ ਕਾਗਦ ਪਰ ਮਿਟੈ ਨ ਮੰਸੁ ॥੪॥੨॥੫॥
jas kaagad par mitai na mans. ||4||2||5||
It is like the ink on the paper which cannot be erased. ||4||2||5||

In plain words

By grace I found the way to see this, and my fear of beginnings and endings simply dissolved.

This self is made of the very same stuff as the One — printed into reality like ink pressed into paper, and no one can ever wash it out.

You are made of the same essence as the One — pressed in like ink that can't be erased.
The deeper layer

Kabir ends with a picture of ink that can never be washed off.

Gur parsaad mai dagro paa-i-aa — by the Guru's grace, I found the path. Gur parsaad means grace, a gift, not something won by effort. Then jeevan maran do-oo mitvaa-i-aa — birth and death have both been wiped away. The fear of beginnings and endings lifts.

Kabir says this self is made of the very same essence as the One, like a spark from the same fire. Jas kaagad par mitai na mans — it is like ink on paper that cannot be rubbed out. Think of writing in permanent marker. No eraser can take it off. You are not a separate, fragile thing. You are the One's own ink, pressed into the page of life for good.

A Question to Sit With

What would it feel like to be sure that the real you can never be erased?
