How The World Aches For What It Cannot Keep

Gond:
garihi sobhaa jaa kai ray naahi.
When someone's household has no glory,

the guests who come there depart still hungry.

Deep within, there is no contentment.

Without his bride, the wealth of Maya, he suffers in pain. ||1||

In plain words

When a home has nothing to give, guests come and leave still hungry, and a restless ache sits inside.

The world is sure it needs this getting-and-having to feel whole — and aches without it.

The world aches for the very things it can never keep.
The deeper layer

This shabad continues the portrait of Maya, now from the angle of longing. The world feels it needs wealth and things to be complete — a home without them seems joyless, its guests unfed, its heart discontent. Kabir isn't mocking the ache; he's showing how deep the world's hunger for the unkeepable really runs.

A Question to Sit With

When has getting the thing you thought you needed still left you wanting more?
