Verse 4 of 6

It Stays Only While The Breath Lasts

ਸੋਹਾਗਨਿ ਹੈ ਅਤਿ ਸੁੰਦਰੀ ॥
sohaagan hai at sundree.
This bride is so beautiful.
ਪਗ ਨੇਵਰ ਛਨਕ ਛਨਹਰੀ ॥
pag nayvar chhanak chhanharee.
The bells on her ankles make soft music.
ਜਉ ਲਗੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਤਊ ਲਗੁ ਸੰਗੇ ॥
ja-o lag paraan ta-oo lag sangay.
As long as there is the breath of life in the man, she remains attached to him.
ਨਾਹਿ ਤ ਚਲੀ ਬੇਗਿ ਉਠਿ ਨੰਗੇ ॥੩॥
naahi ta chalee bayg uth nangay. ||3||
But when it is no more, she quickly gets up and departs, bare-footed. ||3||

In plain words

It is beautiful, and it jingles like ankle-bells — delightful while it lasts.

But it stays only as long as the breath is in you. The moment that's gone, it gets up and walks away without a backward glance.

Everything you can hold stays only while the breath lasts — so weigh it honestly.
The deeper layer

A striking image of impermanence: Maya is lovely, musical, close as ankle-bells — ja-o lag paraan ta-oo lag sangay, with you only as long as breath lasts. Then it rises and leaves, bayg uth nangay, quickly and barefoot. Everything you can hold in your hands keeps you company only for a while. It's not a threat; it's a clear-eyed measure of what things are actually worth.

A Question to Sit With

If some things stay only for a while, which things do you want to give your heart to for the long run?
