Gond:
jaisay mandar meh balhar naa thaahrai.
As the house will not stand when the supporting beams are removed from within it,
naam binaa kaisay paar utrai.
just so, without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, how can anyone be carried across?
kumbh binaa jal naa teekaavai.
Without the pitcher, the water is not contained;
saaDhoo bin aisay abgat jaavai. ||1||
just so, without the Holy Saint, the mortal departs in misery. ||1||

A house can't stand once you pull out the beams that hold it up.
In the same way, without the Name to carry me and good company to guide me, I'd have nothing solid to stand on. These are my beams.
Just as a house needs its beams, a soul needs the Name and good company to stand.
The shabad is a string of everyday comparisons, each landing on the same note: some things simply can't be done without their essential support. A house needs beams; a soul needs the Name and saadhoo (the company of the wise). Kabir builds his teaching out of ordinary carpentry so that a child can feel it in the bones of a familiar house.
A Question to Sit With
What are the 'beams' — the things that quietly hold up your whole life?
