Sikhism·Raag Gond·Shabad 42
Verse 2 of 5

This Is How I Watch for the One

ਐਸੇ ਰਾਮਾ ਐਸੇ ਹੇਰਉ ॥
aisay raamaa aisay hayra-o.
In the same way, I look upon my Lord.
ਰਾਮੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਅਨਤ ਨ ਫੇਰਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
raam chhod chit anat na fayra-o. ||1|| rahaa-o.
I will not abandon my Lord, and turn my thoughts to another. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

This is exactly how I want to look upon the One — with my whole attention, nothing held back.

I will not let my Beloved go and turn my heart somewhere else.

Give the One the same complete attention you give to what you love most.
The deeper layer

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line. It is the center of the song.

Aisay raamaa aisay hayra-o — in just this way, I look at the One. Every example in the song becomes a mirror. The deer, the fisherman and the goldsmith all show a kind of total focus. Namdev wants to look at the One like that.

Then comes his promise: raam chhod chit anat na fayra-o — I will not leave the One and turn my mind somewhere else. Chit means mind or heart. Think of holding a friend's hand in a crowded fair and not letting go. This is the note the whole song keeps coming back to.

A Question to Sit With

What would it feel like to give your whole, undivided attention to one good thing?
