The Calf Set Free to Its Mother

ਜੈਸੇ ਗਾਇ ਕਾ ਬਾਛਾ ਛੂਟਲਾ ॥
jaisay gaa-ay kaa baachhaa chhootlaa.
Like the cow's calf, which, when let loose,

than chokh-taa maakhan ghootlaa. ||2||
sucks at her udders and drinks her milk -||2||

In plain words

When the calf is finally let loose, it runs straight to its mother and drinks its fill of warm milk.

That is the joy I long for — to run home and be filled.

The longing has an answer: to run home to the One and be completely filled.
The deeper layer

The famous calf-and-milk image. After the ache of separation, here is the picture of reunion and nourishment — than chokh-taa maakhan ghootlaa, drinking deeply, satisfied. Namdev balances the longing with its promise: the same love that aches now will one day be fed. It belongs to the block's gentle motif of the One as close as a mother's milk.

A Question to Sit With

When have you finally reached something you had been longing for — and how did it feel?
