Verse 6 of 6

Hold the Name — the Old Books Say So Too

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਗਹੁ ਮੀਤਾ ॥
gurmat raam naam gahu meetaa.
Follow the Guru's Teachings, and hold tight to the Lord's Name, O friend.
ਪ੍ਰਣਵੈ ਨਾਮਾ ਇਉ ਕਹੈ ਗੀਤਾ ॥੫॥੨॥੬॥
paranvai naamaa i-o kahai geetaa. ||5||2||6||
Thus prays Naam Dayv, and so says the Gita as well. ||5||2||6||

In plain words

So, friend: follow the teacher's guidance and hold tight to the One's Name.

The deepest books already say the same thing — this is the road they all point down.

Hold the One's Name — the wise voices of every tradition are pointing the same direction.
The deeper layer

Namdev ends with friendly advice. Gurmat raam naam gahu meetaa — friend, follow the Guru's teaching and hold tight to the Name. Gurmat means the Guru's teaching. Naam, the Name, means remembering the One.

Then comes a warm, generous line: i-o kahai geetaa — and so says the Gita too. The Gita is a much-loved Hindu holy book. Namdev came from a family that the society of his day looked down on. Yet he reaches across to that book with respect. He points to a truth they share, not a contest between them.

Think of friends climbing a mountain from different sides. They take different trails, but they meet at the same top. Namdev says the good roads are all pointing the same way.

A Question to Sit With

Where have you noticed different people or books arriving at the same simple truth?
